Corrie's funny

Corrie stories for 3/31/08

- Corrie frequently comes up to us and has conversations that go something like this:

Corrie- Can you open this for me?
Mom- Sure. Oooh, your hands are cold
Corrie- say 'then go put a jacket on"
Mom- Then go put a jacket on
Corrie- Okay, Mommy

- Corrie often tells us about "girls in her class" or things "her teacher told her she should do". The funny thing is she has never been in a class, never had a teacher, nor has she ever had boys or girls in her class.

Today, i went into Corrie's room to give her the blanket she had dropped. I saw that she had all her dolls lined up on their backs on her mattress. I asked her if they were sleeping. She said "No. They are on American Idol!"

Hehe

What a month

A month ago I posted about needing something to smile about. It was a rough day because we were in the final hours of the life of Therese. She passed away early the next morning. Her funeral was absolutely beautiful. SHe chose all the readings and hymns herself and it contained so much of her personality. Another homeschooling mom came to me right after and said that she wanted everyone to know that if she is not given the time to plan her own funeral Mass, that *this* was exactly the one she wanted. I told her that I was just getting ready to say the same thing to everyone. So, let this be my noticed to everyone now: If it happens to be that a funeral Mass must be planned for me, please contact my church and tell them I want everything exactly like Therese had it.

And, life goes on.

Tennis lessons to take Evan to, chorus for Gianna, doctor appointments to keep up with, retreats to prepare for, homeschooling activities to attend, grading to finish, meals to plan, .... Oh Bla Di Oh Bla Da

Wanna see some stuff from my talented daughter?

My Tara definitely inherited the photographic gene many of my siblings have. Check these out.

Even a picture of her camera is cool!

These two might be small. I copied them fromthe wrong spot, but they are gorgeous

The woods in front of our house

Some artistic shots of wine glasses

And some adorable shots of her little sister

Corrie Grace, 3, is currently calling overalls "eyeballs". She's been doing it for weeks and can't seem to remember they are not eyeballs. It's a riot when she says she's going to go put her eyeballs on, or she needs help pulling up her eyeballs.

Long time no see

Nope. Not gonna give you a lame excuse as to why I've been MIA. Just haven't been around much, I guess.

We started a new homeschool program that is much more time intensive, yet way, way more fun and informative for the kids. That's pretty much where my time has been going.

On Thanksgiving weekend, we had 7 of my family members over for two nights. It was so delightful seeing everybody together, enjoying each other's company, and doing fun things. We are expecting friends from Ft Myers to come visit us next week. I really love having all this company coming here. It's so fun!

We had a lovely Christmas at home. The kids played in two of the plays put on by my parish. Little miss Mallory got to be Mary in the Christmas pageant. It was so cool seeing my kids participate in all this. This year, everything feels so much more like home to me.

We've been enjoying traditional holiday foods from the two countries of my origin- Holland and Canada. We've had everything from French Canadian Tourtiere to Dutch Olie Bollen. Evan, especially, delights in all the various foods he gets to try out because of his heritage.

We just got our first snow of the year last night. Just and inch or so, but it's sticking. It'll probably be gone in a day or two. If I have to do snow in my life, this is the perfect kind: Infrequent, sparse, and fleeting. Of course, I'd prefer no snow at all, palm trees and warm beaches, but mountains are pretty cool too.

Tara goes back to AMU next week. She goes back without a car this time. She totalled her second car in 7 months a few weeks ago. She's totally fine, but we won't be buying her another. She won't need a car on campus, so she should be fine for a while.

Well, that's pretty much our life right now. Hopefully some day I'll have another digital camera so I can start posting pictures again.

Cathy

Are you tired of hearing about Corrie?

I'm not tired of writing about her!

A few Corrie cuties-

1- Miss Corrie almost never fails to thank me for cooking dinner or Daddy for taking us out to dinner. She does this all on her own. We'll get done saying grace and she'll almost always add "And thank you Mommy for cooking this dinner" or "And thank you Daddy for taking us out to eat" She's only turning 3 this weekend. What a darling!

2- The other night we were eating dinner and Corrie leaned over and let out a huge toot. Everyone looked at her and she just very matter-of-factly said "It was Mallory. She farted" We joked around and said we knew it was her. "Nope. Mallory" Still with no hint of a smile on her face. Very serious. A few mintues later, she let another big one go. Without us saying a word she just seriously said "Mallory!" What cracks me up the most about this is how serious she is about it. Not a hint of a smile or smirk. She really thinks we'll fall for it. Silly monkey.

3- On Friday, a friend of our's from Florida took us to the Georgia Aquarium. When we sat down to lunch he said to Corrie that she should save her crusts for him. He was joking, but she took him seriously. She dutifully handed each crust to him as she got done. He dutifully ate them (I know....EWWWWW) Well, last night, we were out with a different family and were having pizza again. Corrie just automatically started handing her slobbery crusts to the dad of that family. He kindly declined the kind offer and I just cracked up when I realized what was happening. She must think that men who eat pizza with us want her leftover crusts. LOL

Lots of changes.

In my most recent post, I mentioned how everything has been the same so that's why I had not posted in a while. Well, things have changed for sure now.

First off, Joe GOT A JOB! A good one, too. He applied for the branch manager position with an employment agency. We used to own an agency, so it seemed like a natural fit. Well, the VP of the company took one look at his resume and said he was over-qualified for the position. He then told him that he has an opening for a district manager and asked him if he'd be interested. He's over four office locations. His main tasks are to do the hiring of the permanent employees, overseeing the branch managers and spending a week at a time with them helping them get their numbers up, etc. Two of the offices are more than 2 hours from our home, one is about 90 minutes away, and the fourth is about 45 minutes away. It's a lot of traveling especially since he has to be there by 6 am, but he doesn't mind. He's enjoying the work.

Tara update- At this point in time, it looks like Tara will be staying up here when the school year starts. She's considering going part time at the Catholic College nearby so she can bank some money to go back to AMU in a few semesters.

Karina- Miss Karina fell in a river this week and fractured her wrist. The kids were playing in a neat little river nearby and Karina slipped on a rock. She was sore but didn't seem too badly hurt. At first it didn't seem she needed medical attention. I poked and proded at her arm, but it was just a bit sore to her. The next day, I turned her hand in my hand it it caused a lot of pain. So, off for xrays and, sure enough, she has a buckle fracture near her wrist. She only needs to wear a splint. She's bummed. She wanted a cast! Silly rabbit.

We've been having fun getting visitors here. So far, a good friend of Joe's from Florida has been here a few times and may be coming back in a few weeks (I think he likes it here, LOL) We've also gotten a family from our homeschool group in Florida come visit for the night on their way home from their camping trip in NC. I've also hosted a friend I met in my online NFP community. She had the honor of being the first NFP board member to set foot in my house. My parents have been here a few time as have my brother and his wife. My aunt from Holland came with my parents last time. What a dear she is.

Oh, I have some sad news to report. A while back, on November 11th, I posted about "Eleven Eleven". In that post, I mentioned a friend of mine whose birthday is on 11/11. I am very sad to report that this dear friend has since been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer of the kidneys. Terminal. It has spread to her lung as well. She was given 6-9 months to live. That timeline ends at the end of this summer and into the fall. It breaks my heart to see the mother of seven dear children, the youngest being 6, be taken from her family in this way. Please keep Therese and her family in prayer.

Well, I think that's it.

Is anybody still reading this blog? I sometimes here that people notice when I don't post, but I haven't really gotten many comments in the "comments" section. Are you all still out there?

Cathy

Haven't updated in, like, forever. You are surely tired of me promising to get better about it and then not doing it. Mea Culpa.

Main reason is that nothing much has changed. Joe is still looking for a permanent job while delivering pizza in the evenings to try to make ends meet. It's not quite making ends meet, so we've gone through almost all the profit from the Florida house sale. That bites. We're not sure what is up with this job market. We're hearing about a lot of people around here having trouble finding work. Must be a localized job drought.

Tara is home for the summer. YEAH! We had to replace her car because her old one bit the dust when she rear ended somone with a trailer hitch. With the insurance money, we were able to get her a nice little Accura. It's not her sporty little Avenger, but it's a very good car. She's working at a very nice restaurant in town. When we ate there back in February, we knew it was just her style. So I asked the manager if they hired for the summer. He said they definitely did since their major source for servers, the college in town, dried up during the summer. So, I got his business card and had her call him. They are tickled pink to have found her, she's real good at what she does. She's tickled pink with the job because it has really good tips. She'll probably go work at Dominos just to fill her time in and get a few extra bucks on top of it.

We had a bit of a scare with Mallory. A few weeks ago, the girls came running up from the basement with her saying she had swallowed a safety pin. I asked Mallory about it. Sure enough, she had been holding one in her mouth and accidentally swallowed it. YIPES. She said it was closed. I called the doctor and she wanted to see an xray of it to be sure that a) it was indeed closed, b) it was not in the lungs and c) it was not stuck in the throat somewhere. So, off we went to the ER for xrays. Thankfully, it was closed and had made it's way to her stomach. We were to go home and look for it. Lovely. Three weeks later we still had not found it so we had to go back for more xrays. It was gone. She had sneaked to the potty a few times, so it must have made it's exit on one of those occasions. She promises never to put things in her mouth anymore.

Hey, I just found this post in a blog entry this afternoon. I thought it was pretty funny. If you're up for a good giggle, take a look http://maliavale.com/?p=726

Well, folks, it's been a great visit. Hope to hear from you soon. I have no idea if anyone is reading my blogs, but I keep typing away. lalalalala

Cathy
Maybe I really don't want to know

I won't be posting pictures for a while. My digital camera broke and $$$ is not available to buy a new one. So, just stories for a while.

Had to tell ya this one:

The kids are in the kitchen cleaning up the lunch stuff. I'm sitting at the computer catching up on my boards while Evan is not using it for school. I hear the noise level go to an excited level. I went to see what was happening. Two of them are walking around the kitchen, still doing their work, but with couch cushions strapped to their heads. I started to ask what was going on but realized I really didn't want to know. The work is getting done. Why do I need to know why they need couch cushions on top of their heads to do it? Whatever floats their boats, I guess. LOL

Spring is springing

One of the interesting things about buying a house from someone who loved to garden is finding out what kind of surprises lie in the ground. Stuff is popping out of the ground in all kinds of places. Trees are suddenly turning all kinds of interesting colors. Back in February, yellow daffodils started to bloom. It was still quite chilly out, yet they were beginning to grace us with spring colors. A few weeks later, some white ones and another variety of yellow started popping out.

This interesting little critter sits at the edges of the yard in a few places.

On the hill at the side of the property, are these very prickly characters. It's like a beautiful purple, yet prickly, blanket on the hill side.

These yellow bushes are all over town. I thought they looked so cool all over the place. I just noticed this morning that we have them too.

A few days ago, our peach tree started to look like this. Mallory calls it a "Wedding Tree". The picture doesn't do the bright pink color justice. It's really quite breathtaking in person.

What is this white stuff?

My, oh my! We awoke this morning to a blanket of white covering our little piece of Heaven. The news said we'd possibly have 1-4 inches of snow overnight. I brought a ruler outside and we got SIX inches of it!

Our fish pond almost disappeared

Check out JESUS!

The kids got out in the early morning light and had a blast

DUCK!

Ready? This is her first snow ever.

Corrie Grace, on the other hand, was none too thrilled.

"You have GOT to be kidding me"

"Nope. Go ahead. Make a ball out of it. I still don't like it"

"Ahhhhhh. Now this is more my speed"

So, our first real snow day has been a blast. We cannot go anywhere because our road is blocked. Everything is cancelled anyway. I made a big pot of oatmeal for everyone when they came back inside. Now they are all doing their schoolwork.

Cool.

Super cool thing happened to me at the store today

I went to the grocery store today with Corrie Grace. As we came in, we passed the shelves with toys on them. She pointed to the little dolls and very sweetly said "Those are cute dollies". I agreed with her and went about my shopping. A few aisles later, an older woman comes up to me and gets my attention. She asks me for Corrie's name. I tell her. She tells me that she was so touched by how cute Corrie sounded when she saw the dolls. She then pulls a doll from behind her back and gives it to Corrie. She hands me the receipt for it.

She told me that she has raised 25 kids and can totally tell when a child has a sweet nature and that my darling had that. As she spoke, she gently stroked Corrie's blond hair. I asked her how she came to raise 25 children. She said that poor women used to drop their babies off at her house for childcare and then never return to get them. She ended up raising 23 such children plus two of her own.

What a neat lady.

I hugged her and thanked her, then she was on her way.

Her name is Sandra. Could you all lift this dear lady up in prayer? She has a heart of gold.

The Thanksgiving and Birthday that ROCKED

This has been one of the best Thanksgiving weekends in history. Seriously!

Two dear friends from Florida, Michelle and Mary Jane, drove up to spend the weekend with us. They also gave our dear Tara a ride up so she could be here too.

We spent the weekend having such a wonderful time together. We enjoyed walking around our town square and visiting the neat little shops (something I rarely get to do since I usually have little ones with me) We made Smores on the outdoor fireplace. We tried to go to a vineyard for some wine tasting, but they ignored us so we figured we'd better go elsewhere. We played board games several of the evenings. Wooonu and Beyond Balderdash are a blast with a group like this. We also took everyone to a really neat waterfall not too far from us. Quite a hike, but a lot of fun seeing the sights.

Here are a few pictures of our day at the falls

Today is Evan's 15th birthday. We took him out to eat last night while our visitors were here. Today he took dinner and a birthday cake with him to youth group at church. The cake features a picture that Gianna took of Evan while he was skateboarding and the store put on the cake for us. It turned out really cool! Check it out.

The best part, though, was being with such great people for a whole weekend. It was so relaxing and wonderful.

Here's a few of us at the table. One has all three of the visitors, and one has me included.

It's going to be hard to return to normal life tomorrow morning.

It's eleven eleven!

Why is that important? I'll tell ya. It's a longish story, so grab a cup of coffee.

Some time ago, my brother, Bill, told me about how he and his wife, Nicole, tend to get to bed at around eleven eleven every night. They joke around about it when it happens again and again. At the time Bill told me about this, he was living in Georgia and we were still living in Florida. We had only just begun to contemplate the possibility of a move there. We started joking around whenever the clocks said it was eleven eleven and, eventually, eleven eleven became our "Georgia thing". Why? I dunno. But it did.

I would go to Adoration and pray about our decision to move. When I'd get back in the car and turn on the engine, it would be eleven eleven on the clock. We'd be discussing Georgia in the car and I'd glance down at the clock and it would be eleven eleven. You get the idea.

It was our "sign" hehe

Okay, now it's time for a little side story that will make sense at the end of today's blog entry.

I really struggled with the decision about moving. I loved Florida. I knew Georgia had some good things for us, but it meant letting go of the things I knew and loved. I started praying to St Therese. I asked her to send me roses during the month of February if a move to Georgia would be blessed. Well, toward the end of February, a guy at a yard sale gave me a silk rose. I looked at that rose in my hand and told St Therese that she was going to have to do better than that since I asked for roseS and that was only one rose plus it was a fake one at that. The next morning, I went to a parish breakfast and one of the ladies hosting it handed me three live roses. It wasn't until I was putting them in a vase at home that I realized that St Therese took me up on my complaint and sent me three LIVE roseS. Alright, I got the message.

Fast forward to my first Sunday Mass at our new parish. I meet a delightful lady who would soon become a good friend. We have so much in common, even the number of children we have. Even the number of miscarriages we've had. Even the fact that we both homeschool all our kids. Even the fact that both of our husbands were recently in business for themselves and were switching to working for someone else. You get the drift.

Her name? Therese, of course!

Her birthday? Eleven Eleven, of course.

So, it's Therese's birthday today.

It also *happens* to be the feast day of the Saint Evan chose for his Confirmation name, St Martin of Tours. *Happens to be*? I think not. Those Saints in Heaven are having fun with this whole thing.

Now, who's the Saint in charge of finding really good jobs with great pay? Maybe St Therese and St Martin of Tours can tap that Saint's shoulder for a little bit of a favor.

So, dear friends and family- Happy ELEVEN ELEVEN!!!

Check this out!!!

Oy! Every time I promise myself that I'm going to stay on top of my blog, life takes ahold of me and time flies by without another entry.

We haven't done much more to the house lately. At least, nothing visible to show you.

I am marveling at the colors all around me. I haven't lived where there are fall colors in over 30 years! Check out these pictures I took this moring while walking around my yard. And, yes, your eyes do not deceive you, you can't see any houses from anywhere in my yard, It's all woods, hills, and mountains in the distance. I still have to pinch myself to check if I'm only dreaming. I'm not. It really is our very own house. The reality of this beautiful place God placed us in hits me almost every day. I miss my Florida, but I sure have a beautiful location here.

Check it out!

A view down my driveway to the road you use the get here

I took this picture a few days ago. For some reason, Corrie Grace decided she wanted to repeatedly kiss the Sacred Heart of Jesus statue in our yard. It was just too sweet to pass up on the photo op.

Well, lunch is in progress so I will cut this short. I'll *TRY* to be better about updating.

Corrie Grace's room? Check!

I'm so excited to be posting the pictures of Corrie Grace's room. It turned out sooooo cute. When I put her to bed, I'll often say "We're going to go see your blanket, and your baby.." To which she now adds "And the pretty room" with a wave of her arm. She loves it too!

Without further delay...THE ROOM!

Time is marching on...

Wow. So much time has passed since I last updated. So much has happened too! Let's see if I can remember it all. My brain has a severe case of momheimers, so don't be surprised if I forget half of what's been going on here.

First- A cute Corrie Grace story-
I was out going to yard sales with just Corrie Grace, just turned 2 years old, in the van last week. I guess she got bored with it after a while. Suddenly I hear her say "Hello?" Pauses a second, then "Oh! Hi Evan" Pauses a second, then she laughs a real belly laugh, then says "Evan is so funny" I guess she decided that Evan called her on the phone to tell her a joke. She is getting so fun to be with now. She's talking up a storm and always keeps us in stitches with her renditions of life.

The house is taking shape nicely. I'll take some pictures of the kitchen some day soon so I can post what we've done in there. We didn't do a ton, but I think it looks so much more like "us" now.

Here is a picture of what's happening in Gianna and Shaylin's room. Tara was home for a week over the summer and she wanted to take charge of the decorating in there. They spent days painting it these colors. The yellow is the bathroom. It'll get a sun on the wall eventually. She managed to start the stenciling and plans on finishing it when she comes home next time:

We're getting ready to start painting Corrie Grace's room in the next few days. It's going to be a challenge with so many angles to deal with. Take a look at those!

We plan on putting a different color on each section of the walls. It'll be tough work but it'll look really cute when we're done. These are the colors we're using

The weather is starting to cool off already. Some day soon we'll actually be seeing fall colors outside our windows. It's been over 30 years since I lived somewhere with "fall colors".

We have loads of deer around the house. They come right into our yard sometimes! It's really cool. I saw a whole family of them down the hill from our yard this morning. There must have been 5-8 of them. Corrie usually scares them away when we show them to her. She calls all furry animals "Bridget" (the dog's name) She tends to shout it out when she sees deer. "Bridget! Bridget! Bridget" Deer don't like shouting toddlers.

We live very close to the town square of our village. It is so nice to be able to go walk around and visit the shops. It's a beautiful place. Even when the shops are closed, it's fun to window shop. Our church is close to the town square and I like walking over to the square and wandering around with a cup of coffee while I wait for one of the kids to get done with whatever activity they are participating with.

Speaking of church, I LOVE my new parish and priest. I was so worried about leaving our phenomenal parish and pastor in Florida. But, we ended up with a very holy and interesting priest. The kids love listening to his homilies and they are always totally on target. I still miss our old parish and priest dearly, but I'm happy we found this one here.

When I moved here, I realized that there wasn't a support group set up for Catholic homeschoolers in our area. The only one was way down in Atlanta and I did not see us getting too involved in that one. So, three guesses about what I did? I started a homeschool support group for Catholic families. Just 2 months after moving here it's already an up and running and THRIVING group. It was obviously a much needed entity. Leave it to the new girl to get it going. Nah. Leave it to Herman's daughter to get it going! hehe

Well, I think that's about it. Gotta start putting a shopping list together for winter things we need to get. Hmmm, blankets, slipper socks, what else...

Any tips from you winterized people will be greatly appreciated.

One room- DONE!

As we are getting this house settled and decorated, I'm going to try and post pictures of each room as we finish it. Here is the first room that got finished. Karina and Mallory are very proud of their horses and butterflies theme.

Mallory wanted butterflies for her part of the room.

Here she is showing off her name on the wall (yes I know, she wanted butterflies, but I snuck in some hummingbirds with them. She likes them too)

Here are a few shots of different angles in her part of the room

Here is where Karina and Mallory's parts of the room meet

And now, Karina's part of the room. Her section is definitely bigger, but Mallory doesn't seem to mind...yet.

Karina showing off her horses and name on the wall

And some more views of her walls

And, yes, I did it all myself!
